My husband thinks there might be a bat in our wall air conditioner. This prospect is not a welcome one. Bats and I? We’re not friends.
We have had bats in our house before. It has been a few years though so I suppose we are due .
Are there “bat people,” you know, besides Batman? I mean people who like bats. Like “dog people” or “cat people.” If there are, I am not one of them.
The first time we had a bat in the house I was instantly in denial. I was lying on the sofa, watching TV, with a view into our kitchen. Craig, also on the sofa (ah, back in the days when we actually sat next to one another!) turned to me as we watched something fly across the doorway in the kitchen.
Me: Was that what I think it was? my pulse already racing.
Craig: Did you think it was a bat?
Me: eeeeeeeekkkkkkkkkkkkk!
Craig was then all manly and chased the bat around the house with a blanket to try to capture it and take it outside. I cowered under a blanket and cried.
I slouched every time I walked into the kitchen for months for fear of another bat attack.
The second time we had a bat in the house, it entered the air conditioner. Craig noted its entrance and said he’d need to get it out of there. By this time M was born, but still an infant. Craig’s plan for evacuating the creature involved opening the air conditioner and letting it fly into the house where he would then capture it and return it to the great outdoors.
My involvement in the process went something like this:
I’ll be in the bedroom with M, and the door will be closed.
Then I sat in the bedroom and cried with my tiny daughter looking at me wondering who the crazy lady was and where her mom went.
I think my reaction matured a lot in the 2 or 3 years since that first incident.
I suspect if I’m sharing my home with one of the flying rodents again I’ll be crying under the covers again as well.

Oh I love bats! Their fur is like velvet! We have them here - darting around during summer evenings. One of our cats got one about 2 months ago - it's body was the size of a mouse - so tiny! :-(
With all the mosquitoes we have - I LOVE seeing the bats flitting around eating them all!
Bats are great for eating bugs ... I do not like bugs ... Bats are cool bugs drool.
I am all for bug eating animals, but not in my house! Just like I don't minds spiders as long as they are not crawling around in my house. Mice are cute, but not in my house. Rats are a bit creepy and are especially not welcome in my house.
I don't care for bats either, last year up at Williams Narrows one night when we were out fishing about 3 or 4 bats were circling the boat, once I saw them, I decided it was a great time to head in!
We've had two bats in the house. Both times I screamed bloody murder and was quite surprised none of my neighbors came to see what was amiss. They are just soooooo creepy. Yuck. Hope it's removed soon and does not come back.
I am VERY afraid of bats. When we had two several years ago, I couldn't handle it. I was really creeped out. So, we literally had a batman come in and batproof our house. Haven't seen one since.
A bat in your house, yikes! They're cool to see outside or in a zoo. But definitely not in your house.
(Darn, I meant to do this blog blast! Hope you win.)
The only problem with bats is that once they figure out how to get in they don't ever want to leave. And then they tell 10 friends who tell 10 friends and pretty soon you have a small village in your attic. Oh, and around here it's illegal to exterminate them. Go figure.
I'm all for bats in theory, but not in my house.
They're protected here as well; can't touch 'em.
