The Third One Gets the Shaft

Yeah, we’ve all heard it. The more kids you have, the less they get on down the line. If you’re last born in the family, you don’t have nearly as many photos, you get hand-me-down clothes, your mom forgets your name.

So far this kid in my belly is getting the shaft. It’s true.

I’ve had a total of two belly photos taken. Although I wasn’t the greatest about taking photos while pregnant with the other two either, I did have more than two taken throughout the pregnancies.

We have not picked a name. We sort of had a boy name picked out, mainly because we didn’t have as many names in the running. This should have clinched that we would be having a girl. Perhaps we’ll really name her something like Tipper or Apple. Or maybe not.

There is currently nowhere for the baby to sleep in our house. It’s a good thing that they’re small when they’re born. She will likely be rooming with Craig and I for a good while. If anyone would like to donate the funds for an addition on our house we’d be most grateful.

Last week I bought 2 new crib sheets. You know, for the crib that we have nowhere to set up. I thought the sheets that we have (which K uses on his toddler bed) could be K’s only and baby might deserve some new sheets. Really, the same 3 sheets used for 2 kids over 5 ½ years…I think we’ve gotten our money’s worth out of them.

Today I bought a package of diapers. So we have 88 diapers that we will go through within the first two hours of baby arriving home. Not like the approximately 500 diapers I had stockpiled for each of the other two. I like to plan ahead.

Of course all these (minimal) preparations are assuming that we’ll get to bring the baby home. Because we don’t have a car seat for the baby yet. The one that the other two kids used, we loaned to a friend. Now it’s expired anyway. I guess we could walk home and carry the baby. That would likely take me about 3 days since I’ll be recovering from a c-section. I don’t move real fast with an abdominal wound.

Other than that, you know, we’re totally ready for the baby to arrive in about 10 weeks.

Gulp.

I better not have a third kid because I did such minimal preparation for my second that I didn't even have a bag packed for the hospital. I was having a planned c-section so I figured that I would be in the hospital for at least 4 days and anything I need could be brought to me. Of course I ended up going into to labor a day early. My plan still worked though!

Wow, 10 weeks!

I felt totally unprepared for our 2nd - and I was "pregnant" with her for about 18 months. You'd think I would have used all that time and stocked up on more than we needed. But, since we were adopting and the wait just kept dragging on and on, at times I just didn't want to get her room set up and ready and have it sit there empty.

When we finally got our referral, I felt like we had nothing. It all fell into place and worked out great. Of course, my last 10 weeks, I wasn't growing another human inside me.

I was three years between kids and totally forgot how to care for an infant. They had to tell me in the hospital to burp her. You'll get it all done, you'll be great. I'm looking forward to the news and the name.

This is why the 3rd kid is usually so easy-going. They learn to just roll with it from the beginning. No place to sleep? Whatever, I'll just crash here on the floor.

I totally agree with diesel, my 3rd is an angel. He just rolls with life, so carefree, LOVES getting things that used to be his brothers (aka hand-me-downs). My sweet, sweet boy.

Now tell me...why did my 4th not get the roll with it attitude? That was when I REEEEALLLLLY needed it :)

Heather: here's the girl name we didn't get to use, Emory Frances. Oh I love that name! I was tidying up m blog and reposted yesterday's on today, losing your comment, I'm sorry to say. But I did add you to the ole blog roll.

The third DOES get the leftover but some of them are goodies.

So true... I guess it's because we know, deep down, that this one gets more love ... love the first one didn't get from all the siblings. You can go pretty far on that .

Heather, I just visited your savvy on-line shop. YOu might want to let Beck know.. at Frog and Toad are still friends... as she's collecting bloggers with such shops for her sidebar.

My third born is SO the opposite of easy-going. Yikes! And she came early enough that we really had no name picked out for her at all.... thanks for visiting!

I was the third and last in my family and as my parents said - a drawer for a crib and my brothers sleepers for clothing did me just fine.

BTW there isn't one photo of me before the age of four (well besides my baptism photos). Number three babies grow up to be tough - so don't worry Momma. We just need love and hugs, but clothing, diapers, and a place to sleep are a nice bonus ;)

Why don't you let us name the kid??

Welcome to the Three's Club. Our youngest was completely shafted in so many ways but she makes up for it. She's quite the little Drama Queen....

My third has so far been treated just like a 1st. I have to be careful to do extra for my 2nd. My 3rd was the best baby, so go with the flow and I ended up buying so much stuff for her since #1 & 2 wore things out. Plus with my new digital camera, it is always snapping shots of the little cutie! It'll all balance out!

You make me want to get pregnant again. No need for room, a crib, a car seat ....

Yeah, know all about that last kid thing- you know I wore your mother's clothes and she's 14 years older than me! I think I have 3 pictures of me when I was a a baby. As for a name- how about Lydia...from your FAVORITE Auntie Sue.

Tell me about it Heather! Poor Parker, being the 4th doesn't even have a baby book. AND his closet is the two laundry basket I have set up temporarily in the guest room.
