I have never been the best sleeper. I came up with excuse after excuse to stay up later than my parents wanted me to. Even today I stay up later than I should. I'm a night person.
So I can relate to my children's excuses for not staying in their beds at night. I can relate, but it doesn't make it any less frustrating for me, especially when I'm looking forward to some time off from parenting.
Their excuses run from the standard "I'm thirsty" and "I need to go potty" to the perhaps more likely excuse of needing to find their lovies. Why do we forget to find the lovies before bed so often? Sigh.
Both of my children have also gotten out of bed at night without excuses. They have both, at times, been sleepwalking. My son does it more often than my daughter does, and many times he just needs to be told to go to bed and he will. My daughter generally needs to use the bathroom when she's been up sleepwalking so we need to steer her to the toilet before we steer her back to bed.
I passed along the cool sleep disorders.

5 people like me!:
From one night owl to another. I can totally relate to you, just last night I stayed up all night since I couldn't sleep and had to up @ 4am anyway to work @ 5am. Ugh, now its nap time!
I went through about a 7 year period of struggling with severe insomnia. I'm still quite the night owl, but I at least get sleep. I so hope my little one doesn't pick that one up from me!
We're having major bedtime trouble over here too!! He just won't settle down. Last night was a little better. I made a point of straightening up his room and putting his toys away before bed, then I sat in his room with him for almost an hour, reading stories and singing songs. He stayed up for another hour after that and had to get 3 spankings for turning on the lights and climbing up on top of his dresser.
It's frustrating. Today for his nap, every time I heard him make a noise I'd go in to his room, and whatever he was playing with, I took away. I didn't just put it up, I removed it from his room. He seemed to get the hint after I took 4 toys out of his room. So maybe we're making a little progress!
I made PJ bags for the kids, so their PJ's, lovies, stuffies and a good book are all in the right spot at bedtime. Sometimes it works.
It IS frustrating when the get up just when you've let your guard down because you think you're off the clock, right? You nailed that one.
