It will get you anywhere

When M was a baby, I naturally made up a song to sing to her when she was fussing. She was a fusser, mostly because she wanted to be held all the time…except when she didn’t want to be held. It was a crapshoot to figure out which.

I discovered early on that babies are suckers for flattery so the song went kind of like this:

M D is so cute.
M D is so cute.
M D is so cute.
Yes, yes she is.

She would quiet herself so she could hear me sing about her utter cuteness and smile in agreement.

I wish I could tell you the tune it is sung to, but the name of it escapes me.

Two years later, when K was born, I needed a new song for my boy. It couldn’t be the same tune, but it ended up being essentially the same words. Flattery works on boy babies too:

K C, K C,
is so cute, is so cute
K, K C
K, K C
is so cute, is so cute.

(Sung to the tune of Frere Jaques)

Ms. D's song has yet to be developed. These things can't be rushed, as the song is likely to be around for years. M, at 6, still smiles whenever I pull her song out to sing to her.

Do you have special songs that you've made up for your kids?

That is so sweet! I never thought of babies liking flattery. But I bet it works. With three kids, you would know!

I made up two songs about my son and still sing them to him.

So true! Babies and little kids love that stuff. I remember trying to keep my daughter amused as a baby by singing absolutely everything I said to her, like our lives were a little operetta. Now, at three, she keeps me laughing by doing the same thing.

I will customize a nursery rhyme, too sometimes. But the most often sung song to my kids when they were babies were "You are my sunshine".

Oh yes, I did the same as well. I was singing these songs before my daughter was even born. Then I found one song in paticular used to calm her down immediately when she was upset. It was about a sea and the boat and I'd sing it for you only I am shy...he he.

I think its very sweet and a good post too!

Oh my gosh!! I thought I was the only one who did that! Haha. I put words together about them.

Cute cute cute. It works, right? =)

We do this for our kids too, and my FIL does too! It seems so normal to me, yet reading yours made it seem so endearing :)

I know my kids still giggle hearing us sing to them.
