Telling

The reason I had to make the whole pregnancy thing a secret at first was because my husband was out of town on business all that week. When he got home, he was told to open the card that was waiting for him. He thought something was up, because I generally don't give him cards just for the heck of it. It was our anniversary that Sunday, but I couldn't wait that long to tell him.

As it was, he'd call at night and ask if anything was new and I'd have to say "oh nothing." Why didn't I just tell him over the phone, he wondered. Well, that's just no fun is it?

I'll admit when I found out I was pregnant with M I wasn't that creative about telling Craig. He just came home from work and I said "Well, you really did it this time..." pretending I was mad. Then I said "I'm pregnant!" and he pretty much fell to the floor.

When I found out I was pregnant with K, I was slightly more creative. We were on our way to the ER because I was sick but I took a test before we went so I knew to tell the doctor. While Craig was upstairs getting ready, I got a hamburger bun out and stuck it in our oven. When he came downstairs I asked him if he'd put something in the oven. "No" he said, "did you?" But then he opened the oven door.

It took a few seconds before he asked "are you pregnant?"

This was my favorite method of telling Craig. After we got married, every time we'd visit his grandfather, his grandfather would ask me "is there a bun in the oven yet?"

So this time I made a card. On the cover it said things like: card stock: .20, stickers: $1.00, photo paper: .25...then on the inside was this photo:

with the words "Telling you there are FOUR people in this photo: Priceless."

So, not exactly original, but it was still fun.

How did you tell (or get told) that there was a baby on the way?

I've been absent here most of the week because both of my kids have had a cold all week, which they graciously shared with me. Let me just say, morning sickness and colds together...so NOT fun.

13 people like me!:

Congrats!!!!When I told my husband about my first, I brought him a doughnut because he always made fun of my baby niece (who is now 16 and not really a niece more of a second counsin) when she said "don't" it sounded like doughnut. With Abby, I told him in a column-- what a shoker. There he was at work reading the paper and BAM! With Nikki, the youngest, I had my mom tell him because afte rhis reaction to Abby, I was afraid he'd divorce me. He didn't. He actually took the news well-- considering he'd not exactly a kid kind of guy.

HEATHER!! That's awesome news!! What happened to you saying 2 is it for me!! The more the merrier I say. How did I tell my husband? I think he knew all along b/c we were trying and I missed my period. Not much creativity there.

I love your bun in the oven - what a great way to break the news!

I'm a little jaded about telling in creative ways. When I found out I was pregnant with my now-20-month-old, I called my husband (who was already at work at the hospital) and blurted it out. He said, "Well, good. I have to go, I'll see you tonight." While a part of me HATED the practicality of the whole thing, I'm becoming a little bit superstitious about it. I told in a creative, fun way for our other three pregnancies (two before my little guy and one after) and each time we lost the babies. So, for me, it's all about a simple announcement... and being really impressed & jealous of other people's cute ideas!!!

Very cute card! I love it.

I think Mr. Swizzle found out I was pregnant when I asked him to come into the bathroom to help me read the darn stick! "Is that 1 line or 2?" Very creative.

I think I just said 'i'm pregnant!' - how very unexciting is that ? ;)

I love the bun in the oven.

You are so much more creative than I was. I just showed the huz my test stick.

Oh, but I did surprise him with the first ultrasound, which I framed and put in a gift bag.

Fun. With Thing 1, I came home from the confirmation visit at the doc and iPastor was napping. I said "sit up and talk to me." Ever the charmer, he said "just talk if you have something to say." So I said "I'm pregnant." He sat up.
