You look lovely today Mrs. Cleaver

Sometimes, people give compliments that aren't quite compliments.

Someone says you look like a celebrity, but it's a celebrity that you don't find particularly attractive. Or, they say your kids are cute and then follow with "they look just like their Dad." Even the slight slam of the innocent "You look nice today" with the implication that you usually don't look nice.

In college, my roommate was dating a black guy who told her I had a fine ass. I immediately went to the stereotype and was offended. So, she asked him if my assumption was correct. He did, indeed, like my big fat ass.

Miss M is convinced that she's complimenting me when she comments "you're getting bigger and bigger Mommy!" Last week Miss M wanted me to take a bath with her. I made a critical error and sat in front of her in the tub. She was washing my back for me and commented "your back flaps Mommy," and laughed. I should have known better than to ask for clarification. Yeah. She was impressed with how my flabby by back is. Not the best way to start the day.

So let's hear the back-handed compliments people have given you. I can't be the only one who gets this, can I?

Oh, Heather, I so feel your pain. Where do I begin?

You know I posted the video on my blog of Annika's drawing of me with the "spots" on my face, but generally I get the "chubby" comments, followed by the laugh.

Oh, and you do have a nice ass, by the way. :)

When Michael says that I look nice, I usually immediately think, "Don't I usually?"

When I was a camp counselor in college, I had a pretty crazy haircut that the kids always commented on. They'd say, "Don't you comb your hair, Miss Kara?"

Kids don't hold back on much, do they?!

My 13 year old and I have been working out and loosing weight. The other day he looked me over and said "Mom, how come your calves are really skinny and the rest of you is, like. . . um . . . normal?"

What is that?

Ha! This is funny. One day my son CJ told me that I had "huge" legs! No, I didn't smack him.

I have a friend who makes comments that sounds like compliments but always have an underlying dig. When I started my blog, she said how good it was and "It must be nice to have so much free time on your hands." Translation: get off your butt and get a job like the rest of us. If you read comments on my blog, I'm sure you'll be able to pick her out!
