7 years

I was one of the kids that signed up for the "Smoke-Free Generation." This was a gimmick they tried here in Minnesota to try to get kids to not start smoking. So, I signed the pledge and went to the concert held at the Metrodome. At the concert we were treated to such heavy-hitters as The Jets and Jesse "the Body" Ventura (I got the arms, I got the legs, I got the muscle.) Truly inspiring.

It turned out that the peer-pressure, or some other force was stronger for me and I started smoking in high school.

I was a slave to the cigarette for more years than I care to admit.

Then I got engaged and had a vision of myself standing in my wedding dress with a cigarette in my fingers. I didn't like the look of that vision. I didn't like that I would need to duck outside during my wedding reception to catch a quick smoke.

So, February 22, 2000, I went to work armed with my nicotine gum and my determination.

Craig assures me that I was a real bitch to live with for at least a couple of weeks after, but I did it. And you can too.

YAY!!!! I'm so proud of you! There should be a law against people who smoke with kids in the car, AND the windows are all closed. Or anyone who smokes period!!

Good choice, your lungs will thank you someday.

I knew the Jets personally when they first started out. They had the same agent as my band did. Somehow the gimmick of being cute super-talented prepubescent musical wonders worked in their favor. Go figure...

I think I was told old for that program, but I did participate in DARE...I don't think it worked for most of the kids past the 8th grade.

But I did see the Jets when I was in high school. They were at the State Fair, and my little brother got a chance to have his photo taken with the lead singer.

Quitting smoking was by far the hardest thing for me to do. It was worse than childbirth. It was so hard to kick the habit.

I quit back in 1999, but don't remember the date. We were living in VT at the time and I remember it being just too cold for me to go outside for a smoke anymore. So I think it was in Nov 1999. Great feeling to finally quit!

Congratulations to you!
